Zayn Kassam

Zayn Kassam is associate professor and chair of religious studies at Pomona College.  An historian of religion with expertise in Islam and Hinduism, her primary areas of research include Islamic studies, gender issues, comparative philosophy, and mystical traditions. She has lectured widely throughout the United States, Canada and Britain and has published numerous articles, including “Islamic Ethics and Gender Issues;” “Politicizing Gender and Religion:  Love for Women, Love for Islam;” “The Case of the Animals Versus Man:  Towards and Ecology of Being;” “Our Worlds and His: Naguib Mahfouz’s Palace Walk;” “Mindfield or Minefield: Teaching Religion in a Multicultural Classroom;” and “Engendering and Experience:  Teaching a Course on Women in Islam.”  She is currently working on two books, one on aspects of Qur’anic interpretation in medieval Islamic philosophy and one on gender issues in the Muslim world.
