In Memory of Ninian Smart
1927-2001

Professor Ninian Smart was one of the earliest members of the International Board of the Forum. His enthusiasm and faithful support are deeply appreciated. He was J. F. Rowny Professor of Comparative Religions at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and was the founding professor of the first major department of religious studies in England at Lancaster University. He published 32 books, both technical and popular, addressing the history of religions, Indian philosophy, philosophy of religion, methodology and theory, religious dialogue, education, politics, and Christian thought. His comprehensive range of books include Beyond Ideology: Religion and the Future of Western Civilization, Concept and Empathy, Dimensions of the Sacred, and The World's Religions.
