Azyumardi Azra

Azyumardi Azra is President of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta, Indonesia. He received the Columbia President Fellowship to pursue his PhD at Columbia University, and upon returning to Jakarta in 1993, Dr. Azra founded Studia Islamika, Indonesian Journal for Islamic Studies. He currently serves as the editor-in-chief of this journal and also is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Ushuluddin (University Malaya) and Quranic Studies (SOAS London). He has been a Visiting Fellow of Southeast Asian Studies at Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies at Oxford University (1994-1995); a Visiting Professor at the University of Philippines, Diliman and Universiti Malaya (1997); and a Distinguished International Visiting Professor at Department of Middle Eastern Studies at New York University (2001), and he is member of the Board of Trustees of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (2004-2009). Dr. Azra has lectured extensively internationally, including at Columbia, Harvard, ANU, Kyoto, and Leiden and has published numerous essays and eighteen books, including The Origins of Islamic Reformism in Southeast Asia; Menuju Masyarakat Madani (Toward Civil Society); and Renaisans Islam di Asia Tenggara (Renaissance of Islam in Southeast Asia), which won the Indonesian national award as the best book of the year in 1999 in the humanities and social sciences.
